2017 Oklahoma Native American Young Adult Language Fair

Hosted by the Center for Tribal Languages at Bacone College
Sponsored by the Kerr Foundation

Native languages are more than just a way for people to communicate. Native languages contain the knowledge and descriptions of the worldview of the ancestors. There is traditional wisdom ingrained within Native languages.

More and more Native languages are becoming extinct each year. Without the involvement of Native youth and young adults in the learning, teaching, and revitalization of Native Languages, not only does the language die, but the ancient cultures and traditions that define indigenous people die as well.

Bacone College’s Center for Tribal Languages is proud to host the first Oklahoma Native American Young Adult Language Fair, sponsored in part by the Kerr Foundation, in the hopes of encouraging the learning, teaching and revitalization of our Native languages by our young adults.

Entrants, ages 18 to 30, will have an opportunity to present their Native language project or performance at this inaugural event, held on Bacone College’s beautiful and  historical campus, 2299 Old Bacone Road, Muskogee, Okla. on April 1, 2017.

A free workshop on establishing a Master Apprentice total immersion program, led by Center for Tribal Languages Director Jacob Manatowa-Bailey, will be offered during the Oklahoma Native American Young Adult Language Fair. The time of the workshop will be announced during the opening ceremony.
