NURSING PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Bacone College offers two nursing programs. The first is an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing (ADN) and the second is an accelerated Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) for registered nurses (RNs).

The ADN program has two tracts: a two year tract and a licensed practical nurse (LPN) to RN tract, called the Career Advancement for Practical Nurses (CAPN). The ADN program is approved by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing (OBN), 2915 N. Classen Blvd., Suite 524, Oklahoma City, OK 73106-5437; telephone 405.962.1800. Graduates of this state-approved program are eligible to apply to write the National Council Licensure Examination for registered nurses (NCLEX-RN)*. The program is also accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). The ADN curriculum consists of both general education and nursing courses, and can be completed in two years. Nursing courses consist of classroom work and supervised clinical experiences in a variety of settings located in Muskogee, Tahlequah, Tulsa, and surrounding areas. Students are required to take nationally normed tests throughout the curriculum and score in a designated proficiency range. Effective the 2005-2006 academic year, students are required to take a comprehensive NCLEX-RN preparation exam and score in a designated proficiency range prior to graduation.

The BSN program is a completion program for RNs. The program is accredited by the NLNAC, 61 Broadway, New York, NY 10006, telephone 212.363.5555, ext. 153. The BSN curriculum also consists of both general education and nursing courses. The nursing courses are delivered in an accelerated format, with classes meeting one evening/week. Students may have additional student meeting times on an arranged basis. Clinical experiences, if required, are individually arranged. The BSN degree completion program can be completed in 55 weeks (15 months).

Expenses for ADN and BSN Programs

Expenses for nursing students are the same as for all other college students, plus additional costs related to: nursing uniforms and accessories, skills lab supplies, standardized/achievement test materials, liability insurance, criminal background checks, and annual concurrent membership dues to the National Student Nurses Association (NSNA) and Bacone Student Nurses Association (BSNA). Additional CAPN expenses include: Excelsior College Fundamentals Challenge Exam, if applicable. There is also a minimal fee for CAPN students transferring the eight hours credit from the Excelsior College Fundamentals Challenge Exam or the eight to fifteen credit hours of advanced standing to his/her Bacone College transcript.

Application for the Career Advancement for

Practical Nurses (CAPN) Tract

The CAPN tract is designed to enable the LPN to achieve registered nurse status within a reasonable time period.

General education requirements are the same for all nursing students whether enrolled in the two year tract or the CAPN tract, with the exception that CAPN students are not required to take the BIO 2122 Nutrition or NUR 1102 Pharmacology courses. Thirty-three hours of general education courses are required in the CAPN tract. CAPN students are required to take 24 nursing credit hours. The deadline for consideration for admission into the CAPN tract is April 15. Pending space availability, a residual admission will be held in May.

CAPN students who are graduates of NLNAC accredited schools are admitted with advanced standing and receive college nursing credits for their previous PN education and experience. Students matriculate directly into the CAPN Transition course, which is held in the summer semester. Students are then required to take 21 additional nursing credit hours to graduate. Students selecting this route will complete the nursing program in two semesters (9 months).

LPNs who have graduated from a PN school that is not NLNAC accredited must successfully pass the Excelsior College Fundamentals Challenge Exam. CAPN students then receive advanced standing, with 15 college nursing credits and are admitted into the CAPN transition course held in the summer semester. Twenty-one additional credit hours are required to complete the nursing program in two semesters.

Admission Requirements

Admission requirements to the CAPN tract are the same as the two year tract (see Admission Requirements under Nursing ADN Program) with these exceptions:

1.      Submission of PN school transcripts;

2.      Evidence of Oklahoma licensure as a practical nurse;

3.      Passing score on the Excelsior College Fundamentals Challenge Exam, if applicable. Evidence of passing must be received prior to admission to the program; and

4.      Successful completion of BIO 2134 Anatomy & Physiology I and II courses within the previous five (5) years (or prior to the first full semester of the CAPN tract); and

5.      Passing score on the MTH 1121 Math for Meds final exam.

Admission Procedure for the CAPN Tract

Applicants for admission to the nursing program shall comply with the application requirements and procedure by following the same procedure as stated above for Nursing ADN Program.
