Volunteers in Mission 2010 Print E-mail

Bacone College is seeking out potential mission groups from various churches throughout the United States to assist in repairing the historical buildings on campus, while focusing on campus beautification.  As the Bacone campus community expands, Volunteers in Mission (VIM) groups play an increasingly important role in the restoration of our buildings on campus and the houses on faculty row.  One of Bacone's biggest supporters over the years has been Mr. Harry Rittenhouse.  He and his volunteer group from First Baptist Church in Marion, Ohio came to the Bacone campus March 2010.  This particular volunteer group was a collaboration of six churches whose members are highly skilled and completed a number of projects on campus.  Mr. Rittenhouse has volunteered his services to Bacone for many years.  The fruits of his labor can be seen all over campus and Bacone is proud to be presenting him with an honorary degree at this year's commencement ceremony.

Bacone has been blessed by many volunteers from across the country. Mr. James Clemons is a missionary from Free Will Baptist Church in Franklin, New Hampshire. He devoted his time to painting the halls in the Palmer Center.  Ms. Rakmi Shaiza from Bethel Neighborhood Center in Kansas City, Kansas brought a youth group consisting of seven members to work in the month of March.  This group devoted a good portion of their time away from school to mission work.  They focused all the attention to the Bacone College Conference Center.  They scraped and painted the foundation of the hotel structure and painted the outside curbs.  This summer, Mr. Rick Dewees from First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas will bring a group of responsible youth May 21-24.  They will be working on landscaping projects as well as painting.  They, along with the other VIM groups who have made verbal commitments throughout the summer will be taking on suitable work projects as they become available. Bacone is thankful and so blessed by the faithful mission groups for their continued dedication to this institution.

If you are interested in participating as a VIM, please contact Bacone's VIM Coordinator, Dustin Cozad:

DAR Portrait Donation Print E-mail
Monday, 22 February 2010

Ataloa Lodge Museum was the place to be on Friday, February 19, 2010. Bacone College President, Dr. Duncan with students, staff and faculty welcomed members of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Daughters of 1812.

Ms. Clara Lafferty of the Oklahoma City DAR Chapter presented Dr. Duncan with a portrait of Charles Journeycake. Ms. Lafferty did the painting herself as a graduate art project at Oklahoma City University.  She graciously donated it to Bacone. The painting was amazing and Bacone College is honored she chose this institution as the recipient. Together, OKDAR and 1812 had the opportunity to share in the portrait presentation at the Ataloa Lodge.

The Oklahoma City Chapter enjoyed a tour of the campus with Ms. Roseanna Spinks. And the ladies of 1812 were on campus to tour the Museum with Mr. John Timothy. This gave us a chance to share the Bacone Story to many of the ladies that had never been to our historical campus. The ladies were able to visit with students and faculty and learn more about our rich history and culture.

Ms. Ruth Faulkner, President of Private Jacob Holley Chapter of Tulsa and Second Vice President for the state set up this gathering since her chapter was hosting a meeting in Muskogee.  She is Cherokee herself and a Muskogee native.  There were a few ladies there that were members of both 1812 and DAR; Ms. Mary Duffe, OKDAR State Regent, past President of OKC Chapter 1812, Honorary State President, current historian national and state parliamentarian for Talley/Chotkey; Ms. Janice Gunn, OKC Chapter member and a state officer for 1812 and Ms. Donna Talley, the State President for 1812 and Chapter Regent of Union Mission Chapter in Pryor for DAR.

130 Years of Excellence Print E-mail

Founder's Day PosterThere was a feeling of calm across campus on the morning of February 9, 2010.  The crisp Oklahoma air in the early morning hours lent itself to something difficult to explain unless you experienced it, but something very real just the same.  On this day, Bacone College would celebrate events that happened 130 years before.  As students, faculty, staff, administration, and guests gathered in the Chapel for what would begin the day-long celebration of how far we had come, you could only imagine what Almon C. Bacone would be thinking.  If you can envision Bacone’s own summarization of his life’s work and his goals for Bacone College, when he wrote, “A Christian school planted in the midst of a people becomes one of the most powerful agencies in the work of civilization.”

The weekly Bacone Hour on February 9, 2010 began with a replay of the infamous Bacone Glee Club from the 1954 Ed Sullivan Show.  As Floyd Jones addressed those in attendance, he remembered how others had commented that the Bacone Choir should feel honored to be in the same company as Elvis Presley and The Beatles as guests on the show.  He said he had always felt however, that Elvis and The Beatles should be the ones that felt honored to be in the midst Bacone Glee Club.

Following the introductions and prayer, those attending enjoyed performances by the Bacone College Praise and Worship Team, the Bacone Gospel Choir, and the Bacone Indian Song and Drum Team.  One could only feel that we had grown so much in our diversity, yet we have maintained our focus, just as the founding fathers had.  Again, when the drum team performed the prayer in their native tongue, those attending could sense the pride and power of what was being accomplished on that hillside in the Creek Nation 130 year’s prior.

Many local dignitaries, including Mayor John Tyler Hammons who presented President Duncan with an official Mayor’s Proclamation naming February 9, 2010 as Bacone Founders Day in the City of Muskogee, attended the luncheon that followed Bacone Hour at Wacoche Hall.  Others who joined President Duncan and the campus community to celebrate our achievement, were local business leaders, tribal representatives, Daughters of the American Revolution and Alumni.

Roseanna Spinks, Manager of the KIVA, gave a brief presentation on the history of Bacone, while John Timothy and Sandra Peters entertained with flute music and song.  Guest Speaker Rev. Wil Brown shared his thoughts about how far Bacone College has come, and how in his travels, he can always find someone who has a connection with the school.

As the luncheon came to a close, and Dustin Cozad, Student Senate President gave the benediction, we look forward to the next 130 years.  Bacone College means so many things to so many people; all with one common thread…their love of something much larger than themselves.
